Linux story, Free Software Development, the progressing of open source and also Linux VS. Windows are some of the topics of the movie entitled “Revolution OS” by J.T.S. Moore. It’s a quite interesting documentary for all of computer users in the world. This is where we know the advantages of the Linux operating system which is developed by Linus Torvalds.
As a user, I should have to know what is the most compatible operating system to use. I always used Windows operating system because it is well known but when I knew about the Linux operating system, I tried to use it. The first Linux distribution I used is the Ubuntu which for me is great operating system, simple and fast operating system to have.
Through this documentary, the viewers will gain some information on how to use open source software. About sharing and distributing the software through licensing in GNU project and for its source code and protects some certain rights such as prohibiting restriction on how to use the software which is enough to have for. As what the documentary states about the open source software wherein it distributes also the source code for its development. Quite interesting, isn’t it? It can can debug the bugs of the software which will enhance the software of what the programmers or the users think about the feautures need. Mozilla Firefox as an internet browser, Filezilla as file sharing, these are some of the open source softwares available in the internet.
Thinking of it that relates to some pirated softwares such as Windows wherein some of its products distribute it as a free. It includes keygen, patch to have an unlimited license. Well, something related but it is different because what an open source states is that it is free but has some restrictions and the pirated one is just the one which has been duplicated and distributed without permission or authorization.
How about some commercialize softwares such as Bill Gate’s Microsoft? Well, this is what Richard Stallman’s target for, to have a free distributing software without any expense to have but again there are some restrictions for open source softwares on how to use it. Some of the interviewers had a great interaction for the viewers; it seems that the users should have to use a Linux operating system.
As a conclusion, Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds had a great cooperation and contribution through making this Free Software Development and Linux operating system distributions as an open source to have a free distribution for their dearest computer users in the world especially students which will have a lesser expense and also will have a new learning to have.
